Social Program

GEBIE has a comprehensive social program to foster community development including infrastructure and economic projects across the Groote archipelago. Mining royalties received on behalf of the Traditional Owners are used to fund these programs for the benefit of the community.

Electricity, education, cultural activities, aged care, funerals and medical assistance are among the areas covered by the Social Program. This Program was developed by the GEBIE Board of Directors to benefit people of Anindilyakwa descent. Six of the seven GEBIE Directors are Traditional Owners of the Groote Archipelago and best suited to identify the community’s needs. The seventh Director is Independent.

A formal funds application and distribution process is part of GEBIE’s commitment to sound governance ensuring GEBIE’s Board and senior management can assess investments and monitor performance. This allows GEBIE to address major social needs and develop long-term opportunities for Royalty Recipients, their children and grandchildren.

The Social Program Guidelines clarify how GEBIE can and cannot help community and individuals. Individuals applying for funding from the social program must be at least 18 years of age and be a Royalty Recipient normally residing on Groote Eylandt or Bickerton Island. Eligible groups and organisations are included in the Social Program Guidelines which also has a full list of services available.
